A Beaverton, OR. man pleaded guilty to the 2003 denial-of-service attack against Internet auction house eBay. The crime involved infecting tens of thousands of computers and with a worm and utilizing that network to assault eBay.
The 21-year-old defendant, Anthony Scott Clark entered the plea in U.S. District Court in San Jose. The penalty for this crime could be a number of things including 10 years in prison, $250,000 fine, three years of probation, and some other penalties.
The crime was quite nasty. Back in 2003, Clark and others put together their denial-of-service attack with a virus hitting over 20,000 different computers and began their assault. The sentencing phase is slated for April 3rd.
This is a good first move really for cyber crime penalties but obviously, this isn't going to put much of a dent in the problem. The best way to hit this guy and others like him is getting the high fines going as well as prison time. It might scare a few out of the business. It still comes down to the financial incentive issue however. As long as the financial incentive is there to continue with these crimes, then they will occur.
