The Jeonkuk Mutual Savings Banks out of Gunsan, North Jeolla Province, had its website hacked by Chinese hackers. This is the first time a domestic bank was hacked by Chinese hackers.
According to Korean online news site Chosun Ilbo, the hackers implanted Trojan horse program to steal user IDs and passwords. The information was exposed on specific online game sites linked to from its homepage.
The article also quoted a bank representative saying no critical damage had been done because the server only introduces banking services instead of offering them.
This is another example of the need for all banks to tighten up security. While many may believe they have adequate protection, it's difficult to gauge the level of risk for many places. This is something many institutions, including institutions in other nations, must be aware of and assume the threat level is always high. This is also proof something other than a password must be used to secure banking information.
