A gang of suspected hackers was charged with breaking codes to slots machines the Russian Interior Ministry said on Wednesday. It's believed these hackers made off with tens of thousands of dollars in the scam.
The Russian news agency, Novosti, quoted Filipp Zolotnitsky, spokesperson for the ministry's economic crime department, saying they suspects were caught red-handed in one of Moscow's gambling spots and all of them were believed to be part of the gang. He said a Georgian national ran the gang.
The statement said the hackers were believed to have reprogrammed four or five different machines across Moscow each night and averaging $25,000 a session. Apparently this was somewhat of an inside operation because, according to Zolotnitsky, large bribes were paid to security and administrators, who in turn allowed the hackers to remove computer chips from the machines.
