The kids at Mozilla just released 1.5 and everyone's excited. It also just crack double digit market share so it's moving along nicely, especially in the face of still dominant Internet Explorer (IE). The open source browser has gained a lot of popularity but as it does, hackers are also taking notice.
Firefox has become quite popular. It's used widely in the offices of our parent company iEntry quite extensively. Many like it better. One of the selling points has long been it's safety compared to that of IE, which has certainly been abused over the years by nefarious hackers with a bone to grind and a buck to make.
As Firefox has picked up in popularity though, a financial incentive begins to come into play and makes it much more appealing to hackers, especially since Firefox is open source.
On another side note is the extensions being built for the new version of Firefox. One included various versions of adblocking tools. Makes sense as most people get tired of various popups and ad blocks made by companies like Google. So, these ad-blocking tools sort of "rub out" these annoying ads for those who use it. This probably doesn't make the users of such ads all that happy but it's certainly a selling point for Mozilla.
