Free firewalls appear to be on their way out. Symantec closed the book on Sygate's free and paid version of their personal firewall. Symantec said users will be give a discounted upgrade to their own product.
Symantec bought Sygate back in August and some suggested then the firewall would get left behind. This makes the second free firewall to come down in recent weeks as Kerio also pulled theirs.
In most cases, cyber security costs. There are a few free services for firewall protection left for Windows out there but not many. There are only two known, ZoneAlarm and Tiny Personal. Who knows how long those will last.
While Symantec and other certainly offer top-notch services, as more and more people switch to broadband, alternatives will be needed for some folks. That might include some type of secure hardware or other free software. This is particularly relevant since these security companies have shown they aren't immune to the occasional hack either.
