The Sober worm has been circulating the internet again in the form of email attachments to official looking emails appearing to be from either the FBI or the CIA. Both organizations have statements on their site but the emails and hackers who wrote them are devious.
The best way to avoid this problem is not opening the files. The problem is both sets of emails end in either FBI.gov or CIA.gov. Both organizations stated they don't send unsolicited emails and both emphasized not to open the attachment.
The letters tell the users they've been under surveillance by the one of the two organizations and tell the unsuspecting user they've been to a number of illegal websites. They ask the user to then fill out a questionnaire for purposes of the investigation. They say the attachment is the questionnaire. It's really (surprise) the worm.
Most of the major online security companies should have patches available to cover this. In the meantime, don't open any attachments from users you don't know or for that matter, from nearly any user. Sometimes things like those can slip unknowingly through someone's email and before you know it, everyone's infected.
