Yes, I know counterfeiting money is a federal offense. I'm not advocating it in the slightest. Treasury Department tends to get rather irritable when you try and do their job for them. Fair enough. But, if you're going to take on the Treasury folks, you better use your head though, unlike two gentlemen in Arizona who forgot to clean out their printer before getting it repaired.
The Southwest Valley Republic newspaper reported the incident on Monday. The U.S. Secret Service (a division of the Treasury Dept.) and the Maricopa County Sheriff's office conducted a 3-month investigation ending in 10 arrests with more expected. According to the Republic's story, the deputies seized $56,000 in funny money and materials they think were involved in the production. They also claimed the ring generated more than $160,000 in bills.
Apparently the beginning of the end came when a couple arrested in this raid sent their printer out for repairs. Apparently, it was jammed with counterfeit bills and for some reason they elected not to remove the bills themselves. Unfortunately for the criminals, someone noticed and gave the police some word of what they found.
Remember, in crime when you try to commit fraud of some kind, make sure you don't let out the means to your ends or they'll catch you every time.
