Students at Indiana University recently received an unpleasant notice saying their personal information had been compromised. Hackers acquired access social security numbers and other information.
IDnews.com, school newspaper for the Bloomington, Indiana based university covered the incident in today's edition. They said by this past Friday, 5,278 students received letters from the Kelley School of Business Dean Daniel Smith stating personal information was in the compromised computer. 4,778 social security numbers were stored on the computer along with other records. All of the compromised information was tied to students enrolled in their Intro to Business class between 2001 and 2005.
IU IT guru James Anderson told the IDNews they discovered the malicious software when conducting routine scans back in August. He commented they were unsure about a number of facts because the instructions for the software were in French. He also pointed out average users don't use this stuff. It's not easy to use and "cryptic."
In the meantime, Anderson gave advice good for any situation when you feel your identity and financial records may have been compromised. First, check your credit report. Any anomalies will show up there if someone has tried to make a large purchase or applied for a credit card. One may also want to check with their bank and then keep an eye on the credit report. The first one is free, and then you can pay to receive it. You can also right letters to the bureaus and they can work out a monitoring option for a minimal fee.
