A new phishing scam is trying to phlounder Yahoo's instant messenger (YIM). IMlogic discovered the piscine pest is being broadcast over the entire YIM network. It's the latest attack by phishermen in the instant messaging world.
The IM.Marphish.Yahoo attack looks like something sort of important. Y!users will get a message from the "abuse department" claiming the Y!user has violated the terms of service. Then the message says the user must respond or risk being deactivated and it provides a link to the nasty site, hosted at the 42.pl domain. Then it redirects users to web page looking remarkably like the Yahoo login page.
According to the information from IMlogic, the attack propagated from a buddy named ychat_complaint_dept_6b. They also said it's likely to mutate with other variations of the screen name as it progresses. IMlogic suggested this type of attack has been particularly effective with the message focused on a loss of the service.
The attacks over instant messaging seem to be happening more often. As more and more people use the instant messengers to communicate, it will become more prominent. This is yet another way for piscine attackers to raid your information.
