Microsoft released their latest security patch on Tuesday. A Trojan exploiting the vulnerabilities was there on Wednesday. TrendMicro spotted the little nasty on Wednesday and rated the damage potential as high.
The Trojan was created based on the vulnerabilities discussed in Microsoft's MS05-053 bulletin and critical patch update. In it, they discussed a vulnerability in the Enhanced Metafile regarding images. This Trojan takes advantage of that vulnerability.
Upon execution, this Trojan causes the EXPLORER.EXE of affected machines to crash. It may also cause applications that attempt to load it to crash. An example of an application that can load EMF files is Internet Explorer.
EXPLORER.EXE is usually the Windows Program Manager or Windows Explorer. The mentioned process manages the Windows Graphical Shell including the Start menu, taskbar, desktop, and File Manager.
The platforms they discovered for Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 and XP with no service pack. They also advised users to download the patch and then scan the system with the appropriate virus protection before hand.
This is just another warning to make sure your computers are updated with security patches from your software companies. It doesn't matter whether it's OS X, Windows or Linux. Vulnerabilities creep up in all of them they need to be patched quickly.
