Microsoft continues to have problems with their monthly patch updates. In August and October, it was problems in the patch itself; September they didn't have a patch and in November, it's something even more basic, they can't get their Software Update Services (SUS) to work properly in distributing the software patches.
While the SUS is slated to be dropped at the end of 2006, it remains a point of distribution for Microsoft updates. The SUS was designed to get updates through corporate firewalls and the replacement is already up and running. The last word was the SUS still isn't working after two days of investigating its problem.
The update was rated as critical with three security patches all tied to bugs in graphics programs in Windows. According to some sources, they see this as Microsoft telling them to go on and start using the new WSUS, which is replace the older SUS.
In any event, this is just one more problem in Microsoft's security patch list. For months now, they've continued to have problems in one form or another with their monthly updates. When the updates are released, one is more inclined to ask what problems are in the update and are they actually worse than the problem they're correcting.
