A new variation on the Slapper and Scalper worms has crept into the Linux lines. Most major security companies have picked up on it and have issued bulletins. Linux doesn't get hit as often as Windows but it does get hit. While this worm isn't considered life threatening, it can be quite annoying.
Symantec has named this grub Plupii. McAfee, TrendMicro, ClamAV and Computer Associates call it Lupper. Kapersky calls it Backdoor.Linux.Small.al. Regardless of the name it does the same thing. It opens a back door on the computer and generates URLs in order to scan for other computers to infect.
The big threat isn't necessarily to one individual computer but to networks. What happens is it sends out HTTP requests to port 80 and it will also grab email addresses stored in web servers files. Most companies have a fix in but apparently, it can also affect third-party apps as well.
