After problems with the monthly security update in September, October looks to be back on track. Although seemingly a bit delayed in the bulletin, it's now on the website with details, including 9 total security bulletins, one of which ranks at the highest maximum severity rating.
· 8 Microsoft Security Bulletins affecting Microsoft Windows. The highest Maximum Severity rating for these is Critical. Some of these updates will require a restart. These updates will be detectable using the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) and the Enterprise Scanning Tool (EST).
· 1 Microsoft Security Bulletin affecting Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Exchange. The highest Maximum Severity rating for this is Important. These updates will require a restart. These updates will be detectable using the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA).
Microsoft also released an update for their Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool through their standard routes of distribution although they did say it wouldn't be distributed using the Software Update Services.
The standard plan is the bulletin on Thursday (yesterday) and then the patch release on Tuesday the 11th and the TechNet Webcast on Wednesday the 12th at 11 a.m. PDT. Folks may want to pay attention to this one as the highest severity update should be the one they didn't do in September so one can figure the worm boys and other hackers will be looking to exploit these pretty quickly.
