America Online launched a spyware protection packaged today designed to find and block 28,000 known types of spyware and adware.
Partnering with Computer Associates (CA) to develop AOL Spyware Protection 2.0 (ASP 2.0) using CA's eTrust and PestPatrol technology, AOL says it is one of the most comprehensive anti-spyware packages available. It includes four time-interval scans-minute-to-minute, every 15 minutes, daily, and weekly.
"Spyware programs are the snakes of the Internet," said Joe Redling, President, AOL Access Business. "They creep silently onto a user's computer and wrap themselves around everything on the machine, choking the computer and poisoning the online experience."
The new service will be available automatically and free of charge to AOL 9.0 and 8.0 members, working via unused memory to prevent slowed PC performance during scans and updates. Updated versions are expected to be released later this year and early next year.
Computer Associates' eTrust PestPatrol has sold more than 13 million licenses in 100 countries over the last five years.
