Yesterday, Iconix, Inc., released icon-based visual email identification software that tags incoming emails with company logos to confirm the email's authenticity in an effort to combat phishing scams and spam.
Using Iconix eMail ID Software, the Truemark service enables icon display in emails allowing users to identify senders as trustworthy. The inbox also displays a buddy-icon column where personalized buddy icons appear next to messages from approved lists.
The software is already available for Yahoo! Mail, and later this month will be available for MSN Hotmail, among others. The client plug-in can be downloaded for free here.
The Truemark service is intended as a security measure to protect against bogus phishing and spam emails, posing as legitimate businesses, responsible for malware and identity theft. The source of the email is matched up with a registry contained at Iconix. Once a two-step verification process is complete, the company logo appears signaling that the mail is legitimate.
"With phishing and identity theft running rampant, today's consumers worry that opening email can be like opening Pandora's box," said Jose Picazo, president and CEO of ICONIX, Inc. "Many consumers simply delete messages from banks and other businesses rather than risk the possibility of viruses or identity theft."
