Symantec just published their biannual statement on the affairs of security on the Internet and it covers a lot of ground. A lot of facts were published and many of them don't bode well for the future of Internet security.

Some highlights include:

Vulnerability

· 1862 newly documented vulnerabilities, the most ever

· 97% of vulnerabilities were moderately or highly severe

· 73% of reported vulnerabilities were classified as easily exploitable.

· 59% of vulnerabilities were associated with Web application technologies

· 25 vulnerabilities were reported for Mozilla browsers and 13 for Internet Explorer.

Attack Trends

· For the fourth consecutive period, Microsoft SQL Server Resolution Service Stack Overflow Attack was the most common, accounting for 33% of all attacks

· Symantec said their sensors averaged 57 attacks a day.

· The most frequent TCP was 445, a popular choice for Microsoft file and printer sharing.

· They identified 10,352 bots per day, up from 4,348 ending in Dec. 2004.

· On average, Denial of Service attacks grew from 119 to 927 per day an increase of 679% over the previous reporting period.

· 33% of Internet Attacks originated in the U.S., up from 30% last period.

· During the 6 month period of Jan 1 to June 30th, education was the most frequently targeted industry followed by small businesses.

These highlights are just a few. As more and more people use the Internet, the more possibilities of criminal behavior exist. All of these problems will continue into the future and in some ways, as society becomes even more electronically dependent and relies more and more on the wireless technologies and other areas, it will become easier and easier to work one's way into those tiny little holes and steal all kinds of "secure" information.
