Microsoft announced a security update to repair problems in both Windows and their Word data processing software. The three flaws could create real problems for users of both programs.
The flaws allow attackers to not only take control of a person's computer but also steal information and even launch malevolent attacks against those unsuspecting users.
Two of the flaws utilize the imaging used in Windows. The attacker gains access by coaxing the user into viewing a digital image with code that exploits the vulnerability. All it takes is getting into one of these images and your computer could be loaded with garbage.
The flaw in Word works in all versions between 2000 and 2004 this process is basically the same only instead of a digital image, a document is used. If user opens the document, then the hacker is in.
This is latest effort by Microsoft to not only improve their program security but improve the company's image, particularly because Microsoft has a long standing reputation of being particularly vulnerable to attacks from hackers. Many attacks in the past have been built on various programs in the Windows family. Microsoft continues put out security warnings and patches fairly frequently.
