The United States Patent and Trademark Office has granted McAfee its 150th U.S. Patent, increasing the size of McAfee's gportfolio.
The company has been granted 53 patents just in the previous year alone. The patents cover an array of areas such as system and network technology innovation, advancement of future technologies, and special areas of research and development.
"McAfee is constantly innovating to ensure that customers are optimally protected from computer viruses and our patent strategy is working," said George Samenuk, chairman and CEO of McAfee.
"With this technology, customers are ensured the best virus protection possible, even in the event of early termination of virus testing," he added.
The new patent is called "Test Driver Ordering" and covers various programs and products for testing computer files for viruses using a library of test drivers.
The company explains that this is accomplished by classifying the drivers based on a priority in which associated tests should be used. To this end, higher priority testing is carried out first so that, if the testing is terminated before completion, performance of high priority testing is ensured.
According to a particular example, among many encompassed by the granted patent, virus tests are applied in accordance with drivers read from a library.
Such drivers are equipped with classification data relating to a priority in which such drivers are to be used during the testing. To this end, the drivers are applied in a variable priority order dependent upon the classification data for ensuring that, if testing is terminated before completion, the highest priority tests will have been applied. Thus, high priority tests are carried out before lower priority tests.
