A group of cyber-criminals have targeted U.K. government agencies and companies over and over again with Trojan horses in order to steal information.
The group is believed to be Asian, and they have been responsible for over 1,000 cyber-theft attempts over the last several months. They have gone after organizations in 50 countries.
The UK's National Infrastructure Security Co-ordination Center said, "Parts of the U.K.'s critical national infrastructure are being targeted by an ongoing series of e-mail-borne electronic attacks. While the majority of the observed attacks have been against central government, other U.K. organizations, companies and individuals are also at risk." Gregg Keizer of TechWeb News writes:
While the attacks have been underway for some time, the NISCC said in its alert that it wanted to spread the news to "raise awareness of these attacks and provide protective advice."
The Trojans, which arrive either as attachments to e-mail messages spoofed as coming from trusted contacts, news agencies, or even government departments, or are installed after users surf to links embedded in other such messages, are after information, pure and simple.
"Trojan capabilities suggest that the covert gathering and transmitting of otherwise privileged information is a principal goal," said the NISCC's alert. "The attacks normally focus on individuals who have jobs working with commercially and economically sensitive data."
Emails containing the Trojans are normally spoofed to look like they are from government or news agencies. They have been found to be more of a threat to machines running Windows.
