ShadowStor is releasing its own disk-based image backup and disaster recovery software to compete with Symantec Live State Recovery and Acronis True Image software.
ShadowStor's core hot volume snapshot technology, which allows IT administrators to create an image of their system while a server or PC is running, is currently used in third-party software, including Symantec Live State Recovery and Ghost 9, among others. ShadowStor's product offering will provide the next generation in hot snapshot technology and improve disk-based backup and disaster recovery.
"Our software solution is an amazing leap forward in backup and disaster recovery," said Brandon Nordquist, vice president of product management. "We are giving IT administrators more tools, greater flexibility and requiring fewer resources by allowing end users to recover their own files."
Product Features
ShadowProtect Server Edition and ShadowProtect Desktop Edition will allow IT administrators to create exact point-in-time backups of Windows servers, PCs and laptops. ShadowProtect creates an exact image of an entire disk or a specific volume -- without any downtime.
ShadowProtect also allows IT administrators to schedule full or incremental backup images, while the system is still online and accessible, which are compressed and encrypted. This means administrators can choose the most efficient way to save their image files and they are securely stored until needed. Then backup images can be mounted as a separate drive or a mount point so it's easy to restore individual files or folders, if desired. ShadowProtect also allows administrators to update an existing image file. This means an administrator can mount an image file, run a virus scan and fix the file, should a virus be detected. In the event of a disaster, administrators can perform a complete bare metal recovery using the ShadowProtect Recovery Environment.
Additional features will allow IT administrators to:
-- Mount thousands of point-in-time images simultaneously
-- Create backup images without the need to install software
-- Create crash-proof incremental images -- continue incremental backups even following a system crash
-- Take snapshots of multiple volumes simultaneously and image them at the same time, reducing the backup window
-- Remotely control the disaster recovery process without the need to purchase additional software
-- Save disk space by consolidating incremental images
-- Automatically schedule full and incremental image backups
-- Provide the highest-quality backups through true Microsoft VSS integration.
ShadowProtect's streamlined architecture requires a fraction of the resources needed for other similar disk-based disaster recovery solutions.
"With ShadowProtect, image management becomes much simpler," said Scott Barnes, ShadowStor's chief technology officer. "IT managers can schedule incremental backups to occur as often as needed, even every few minutes. Then they can mount those incremental backup images as drive letters or folders for access through network shares."
Pricing and Availability
ShadowProtect Server Edition is scheduled to be available in North America in July for $699. ShadowStor will release ShadowProtect Desktop Edition at the same time for $69.95. ShadowStor also plans to offer existing Live State Recovery and True Image customers competitive upgrade pricing when they switch to ShadowProtect.
