SafeNet is the first company to ship software protection keys that are compliant with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directives.

Beginning with customers in Japan, SafeNet is currently shipping its Sentinel Software Protection Keys, which have been confirmed "environmentally friendly."

The RoHS and WEEE initiatives, or the "Green Initiatives", are directives founded by the European Parliament, which document the restriction of use of certain hazardous substances in electronic equipment.

The RoHS directive mandates that all new products sold after July 1, 2006, shall be predominantly free of certain hazardous materials. After this timeframe, companies that continue to sell non-RoHS and WEEE compliant products could be subject to strict penalties.

"As the market leader of software protection hardware keys, it is important for us to be on the forefront with these initiatives to assure that our business partners can become compliant with our products. As part of our overall RoHS initiative, we will phase in RoHS compliant products throughout 2005," said Prakash Panjwani, Vice President and General Manager for SafeNet's Rights Management Business Unit. "We plan for all Sentinel Software Protection Hardware Keys to be shipping RoHS compliant by the fourth quarter of this year."

SafeNet is sensitive to the increasing environmental concerns being raised with electronic products containing hazardous substances. There is a company-wide effort to comply with RoHS directives for all SafeNet global product lines.

This effort may also include working with certain key customers in situations where a lead free product is urgently needed. Selected SafeNet product lines are already well underway in the process of being RoHS compliant.
