Yesterday, Microsoft announced its plans to introduce a new subscription-based service called Windows OneCare which will include a package of tools to keep Windows PCs healthy.
"Windows OneCare is the next major advance in our ongoing efforts to help keep consumers' Windows-based PCs 'healthy' in a way that's simple and as worry-free as possible for them," said Ryan Hamlin, general manager of the Technology Care and Safety Group at Microsoft.
OneCare will become available to the public at the end of 2005 after an invitation-based beta version is released in the summer. The product will first be tested internally among employees of Microsoft.
Rival companies McAfee and Symantec seem to be shrugging off Microsoft, as they know that they have years of experience in the security indsutry. They don't seem to be too worried about OneCare.
"For people buying security software, it's typically all about trust," said McAfee President Gene Hodges. "Who do they trust to secure their computers and do this on a reliable basis? Microsoft, even though it's a huge, powerful company, is going to have to prove to people that it can build good products and do the job well."
The projected cost for Windows OneCare is $80 a year. The subscription service will include virus and spyware filtering tools, backup and storage on Microsoft servers, and automatic tuneups.
