The REALTOR Secure program of the National Association of Realtors is on the way to becoming the recognized industry standard for information security, according to leading real estate industry experts meeting here.

"REALTOR Secure is becoming the security standard for the industry, indeed the gold standard," said Mac McMillan, president and chief executive officer of CynergisTek Inc. in Austin, Texas, speaking at a panel during NAR's Midyear Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo here May 9-14.

"Does anyone in the real estate industry doubt that they have considerable amounts of confidential and valuable information? Hackers and even criminals typically go after organizations which have substantial information that has value and needs protecting. This includes real estate listing, contact, employee and business information. Fortunately, NAR's Center for REALTOR Technology has developed REALTOR Secure, a best practices approach to designing, implementing and managing information security designed for the needs of real estate professionals," McMillan said.

Commenting on industry security issues, Todd Costigan, CRT's senior manager and panel moderator, said, "Daily news reports alert us to the dangers of identity theft, information breaches and data compromise. It is time to bring the program to all members of the industry. With the program NAR has dedicated efforts to make aware and educate members of the industry on the importance of information security. Through the REALTOR Secure program, NAR leads the real estate industry in protecting member and transaction information, and an efficient marketplace. This is vital to ensure continued success of cooperation in an efficient and secure real estate marketplace."

Noting that unauthorized use of brokerage listing by outside entities has increased, Costiogan said, "Pirated or unauthorized use takes revenue from brokers. NAR members should have information security and protection adequate for their level of risk. REALTOR Secure allows members to view information security as a business issue and address it as a part of their overall business plan.
