According to a survey to be released next week by First Data Corp., up to 43% of have been "phished" for personal information. Five percent of those took the bait.
The telephone survey of 2,000 people was conducted by Synovate to investigate the extent to which people are tricked into giving up bank account, credit card, social security, and other sensitive information.
A report by Gartner Inc. estimated that victims cost U.S. banks and credit card issuers about $1.2 billion in 2003.
An example of a phishing scam is when computer users receive an email that appears to be a legitimate contact, with logo and letterhead, from their bank.
The message states that there has been a problem with their account and the bank customer needs follow a link, account number ready, to a webpage to remedy it.
The five percent who fall for it find out a short time later that this was an expensive mistake.
The Federal Trade Commission warns not to e-mail financial and personal details, and legitimate companies won't ask for that information by email.
