SonicWALL has created an innovative secure network to help The Coffee Society compete, expand, and maintain its reputation as "a great good place."

Owner Ralph Flynn founded The Coffee Society in 1989 to provide Silicon Valley workers with "a great good place" in which to unwind, socialize, or work. The company's reputation is founded on superlative customer service, a clean and safe environment, plus additional facilities such as free wireless access, fax ordering, and high-quality products. Over the past 12 months, Flynn has opened two additional facilities, with plans for more in the future. As he prepares his organization for growth, Flynn has turned to innovative technologies to consolidate and contain management costs.

The Coffee Society has deployed SonicWALL's PRO 1260 -- a combined dynamic threat management firewall and switch -- at all of its locations to provide secure, separate network zones for back-office systems, point of sale (POS), voice and video over IP (VVoIP), and guest wireless. Guest wireless access is secured by SonicWALL's SonicPoint intelligent wireless access points. The wired and wireless network is protected at the perimeter by SonicWALL's gateway anti-virus/anti-spyware/intrusion prevention services. The system was installed by Cupertino-based SonicWALL channel partner KIS Systems.

"I wanted to use the secure network as a springboard for growth," said Flynn. "This new technology helps us compete with larger coffee suppliers by keeping management costs down and allowing us to do a lot more with fewer people. Even better, it helps us maintain our reputation for excellent coffee and excellent service."

By adding VVoIP connections, Flynn is able to provide scheduled or impromptu training, hold business meetings, perform day-to-day management tasks, undertake remote trouble-shooting and improve physical security at each of the outlets, all without leaving his office. Voice over IP headsets enable immediate communication, allowing Flynn or his managers to provide employee recognition, feedback or coaching in real time.

"The new network has allowed us to intensify staff training, improve productivity, and offer consistently high-quality product. We've been able to analyze the business in real time to adjust our processes for high and low-traffic periods. Our travel time for training and management is vastly reduced, so our management cost per store is also lower. As an example, I saw, over the video system, that the sales price for an iced tea was too low. We tested the codes, identified a glitch in our POS programming, and corrected the problem within minutes. That's productivity! SonicWALL understood our business requirements, offered solutions within our reach, and provided a network that supports our ability to scale and grow the business."
