According to Office Depot's new Information Protection Survey being released for Office Depot Small Business Month, fully two-thirds (67 percent) of employed U.S. adults now shred credit card offers and convenience checks before putting them in the trash.

Half of those surveyed (49 percent) say they shred confidential employee information before discarding. Further demonstrating concern over identity theft, more than one-third (37 percent) of the respondents make a point of bringing mail directly to the post office for pick up instead of leaving mail unattended in their mailboxes.

The nationwide survey of 1,962 employed U.S. men and women was conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Office Depot, a leading global provider of office products and services. The survey is part of Office Depot's recognition of National Small Business Week (April 25 -29) and Small Business Month (running through May) to show the company's appreciation and support for the issues that small businesses face on a daily basis.

"We recognize that information protection and the growing concern about identity theft are among the important topics that small businesses must deal with in today's business environment," said Chuck Rubin, Executive Vice President and Chief Merchandising/ Marketing Officer at Office Depot. "Therefore, small business owners need to be proactive about information protection. Even taking some basic measures, such as shredding, installing anti-virus software, protecting computer data, using security envelopes and locking file cabinets and safes in the office are all meaningful steps in the right direction."
