US District Court sentences Jerome Heckenkamp to eight months in prison and orders restitution paid to firms he compromised.
The 25-year old pleaded guilty to two counts related to attacks made in 1999. His prison sentence will begin on July 11. Restitution of $268,291 must be repaid as well.
Mr. Heckenkamp joined Los Alamos National Laboratory after he made the attacks while a student at the University of Wisconsin.
His crimes included using Trojan programs in eBay's computers to steal usernames and passwords. He performed similar acts with computers at Qualcomm Inc.
Other businesses he illegally accessed were Exodus Communications, Juniper Networks, Lycos, and Cygnus Solutions.
