High profile thefts from Polo Ralph Lauren and shoe merchant DSW prompt industry to implement better security measures.
Mastercard International and Visa USA begin to flex their muscle, and have requested a big cleanup of data security by major retailers.
A June 30 deadline has been set for retailers to comply with the jointly developed Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI) or face the possibility of fines or other punishments.
The potential security problems have been exacerbated by more retailers collecting more customer data, and in turn sharing that data with more businesses. Companies wishing to gain and remain in compliance with PCI will have to show how they have secured their businesses electronically, with regular audits and other security assessments.
If businesses can't control access to data better, they may find the government stepping in to mandate tighter privacy standards. That prospect could be even more expensive than voluntary compliance with PCI.
