The North Carolina Technology Association announced that its president and CEO, Joan P.H. Myers, has completed an Eisenhower Fellowship on cyber security and cyber terrorism.

The Eisenhower Fellowship program is a prestigious international executive exchange program, which focuses on professional enrichment studies abroad. Myers conducted her fellowship in Ireland and Britain, meeting with more than 56 representatives of academia, law enforcement, government, public policy and business.

"Ireland was an excellent location to study important issues surrounding cyber security and terrorism for Joan," said Joe Freddoso, director of RTP site operations for Cisco Systems, Inc. and chairman of NCTA. "As a country, Ireland has experienced significant change in a short time frame with both the peace process in the north and the rapid technology-driven economic development in the south. Plus they hold significant intellectual property assets, thus becoming a rich environment for cyber criminals. Most importantly, a number of NCTA's member companies have operations in Ireland."

NCTA's interest in cyber security issues began over five years ago when its board of directors collaborated with the FBI to launch and support the highly successful InfraGard public-private sector partnership on cyber security and critical infrastructure protection. NCTA maintains an active Homeland Security Committee and has authored a plan for the creation of a Defense Technology Innovation Center that will be presented to the N.C. Legislature next week.

"The issue of cyber security is critical to every business, government entity and citizen," said Myers. "As we have experienced with the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001, new threats and consequently the issues that evolve from them are quickly emerging. To have a chance to study these issues with leading experts, policy makers and cutting edge technology companies was a tremendous opportunity and honor and I'm looking forward to applying this knowledge to help the technology industry in North Carolina."

The Eisenhower Fellowship program was established in 1953 as a private, nonprofit, non-partisan organization, which seeks to honor then President Dwight D. Eisenhower for his contribution to humanity as a soldier, statesman and world leader.
