Symantec DeepSight Alert Services was named the Clear Choice winner by Network World and Network World Fusion in a rigorous comparative review of seven vulnerability alerting services.
Symantec DeepSight Alert Services earned a rating of 4.88 out of 5 to be selected as the best all-around vulnerability alerting service.
"Symantec is pleased to be recognized by Network World, one of the industry's most respected IT publications, and we are gratified that its editors have singled out Symantec DeepSight Alert Services as the top vulnerability alerting service in this head-to-head comparison," said Arthur Wong, vice president, Symantec Security Response. "This award underscores Symantec's commitment to delivering world-class solutions and services that enable true proactive protection and help ensure business continuity."
Symantec DeepSight Alert Services delivers personalized vulnerability and malicious code alerts to inform organizations of new potential threats. The service delivers notification of vulnerabilities and exploits as they are identified, providing timely, actionable information and guidance to help mitigate risks before they are exploited. Symantec analysts monitor potential threats 24x7 across more than 18,000 distinct product versions and information from more than 150 authoritative sources.
"When the data analysis dust settled in our own tests, Symantec's DeepSight Alert Services came out as our Clear Choice winner," Network World editors wrote. "It provides the most delivery options, very detailed reports, detailed alert category configuration, and quick response times."
For their Clear Choice Test of vulnerability alerting services, Network World focused on four main performance areas: alert information, alert delivery, alert management, and alert coverage.
In the alert information category, editors reviewed the classification of vulnerabilities, the description provided for the issue, and the suggested remediation plan. They concluded, "DeepSight Alert Services provides the best overall information, breaking risk ratings into severity, impact, ease of exploit, and credibility of alert."
For alert delivery, Network World editors looked at the method and format options used by the service and the timeliness of the announcement. "For delivery methods, DeepSight Alert Service stands out with the most options, including email, Short Message Service mobile text messaging, fax, and voice ... DeepSight Alert Service is the only service currently offering PDF delivery," editors stated. "The reports are clear and easy to read."
Network World editors emphasized the importance of having alerts delivered on time. "Timeliness of alert delivery is critical," they wrote. "DeepSight Alert Services was always the fastest, sometimes issuing alerts days before the other services."
Editors' alert management tests centered heavily on the GUI used to configure alert profiles and view alerts, and took into account general ease-of-use and documentation. "DeepSight Alert Services employs a three-step method for alert configuration," they explained. "You can set up the delivery method, establish the desired technology lists, and establish your monitors ... Product selection for alerts is provided by an excellent interface ... Inclusions and exclusions can be identified during any step, making for a very flexible interface."
