A new flaw has been discovered in Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser that allows malicious users to create fake sites that could lead to new email phishing scams.
The hole will give attackers the ability to display a fake site using IE, even though the browser indicates the site as safe. These fake sites will also show the Secure Socket Layer icon, making the ruse even more effective.
As indicated by ComputerWeekly.com, this hole would allow attackers to steal sensitive user information that can facilitate identity theft. The security issues, as with most IE-related holes, are found in the browser's ActiveX software. The vulnerability can also affect users that have upgraded to Microsoft's Service Pack 2.
Microsoft is currently investigating the problem. A spokesperson indicated that no attack using this vulnerability has been reported. Until a patch is released, security experts recommend disabling ActiveX or setting the browser security settings to high.
