Internet Security Systems (ISS) announced the latest release of its Proventia Integrated Security Appliance product line with spyware blocking.

Spyware, software applications installed on desktop computers without a user's permission, is playing an increasingly starring role in computer breeches as a sophisticated method of obtaining confidential information. The problem continues to grow, and according to an October 2004 Online Safety Study by the National Cyber Security Alliance, 80 percent of personal computer users surveyed had spyware programs installed on their machines.

"By blocking access to sites that knowingly distribute spyware applications, the Proventia Integrated Security Appliance prevents users from inadvertently installing it on their systems," said Greg Adams, vice president of product development, at Internet Security Systems. "Preemptive protection is key in the battle against spyware and ISS is ultimately preventing the unauthorized release of personal or confidential information to an untrusted party."

Designed to stop Internet threats before they impact business, Proventia Integrated Security Appliances are a key component of Internet Security Systems' Proventia Enterprise Security Platform (ESP), capturing the company's vision for preemptive enterprise protection. These appliances help organizations to preserve network uptime, improve productivity and prevent embarrassing security breaches. With a combined functionality that unifies anti-spyware, firewall, virtual private network (VPN), anti-virus, antispam, Web filtering, e-mail security and intrusion detection and prevention, Proventia Integrated Security Appliances automatically combat unauthorized access, network attacks, malicious code, blended threats such as SQL Slammer, Code Red or MS Blaster, hacker exploits and phishing.

Anti-spyware capabilities within the Proventia Integrated Security Appliance line are enabled through a new spyware Web filtering category. As with other Web filtering categories in the Proventia Integrated Security Appliance, the contents are automatically updated, without administrator intervention. This means that as new sites appear or as spyware makers shift sites to avoid detection, customers are automatically updated and protected.

Proventia Integrated Security Appliances also receive updated protection, from ISS' X-Force research and development team, for new software vulnerabilities. By shielding security vulnerabilities across the IT infrastructure, network devices and IT assets are protected before attacks are released.
