Worldwide VPN and firewall hardware and software revenue increased 2% 2Q04 to 3Q04.

It is projected to grow 16% to $843 million by 3Q05, according to Infonetics Research's quarterly worldwide market share and forecast service, VPN and Firewall Appliances and Software. Annual revenue is expected to grow to $3.6 billion in 2007.

Both Cisco and Juniper had a soft quarter for appliances, but Cisco's strong growth in hardware secure router sales and growth in SSL VPNs balanced out the decreases and helped drive some growth in a historically soft time of year.

"SSL VPNs are starting to come in to their own now, and make a real impact on the market," said Jeff Wilson, principal analyst at Infonetics Research. "At first it was thought that their usability was more limited because they were a remote-access only solution, but now many vendors are positioning them for internal security and company-wide secure application access, which broadens the target market significantly."

3Q04 Market Highlights

-- Cisco remains the overall VPN and firewall appliance and software revenue leader, a position they have maintained since the first quarter

-- Check Point is second and Juniper is third for revenue

-- VPN and firewall appliances make up 82% of all VPN and firewall hardware revenue, software accounts for 13%, and SSL VPNs account for 5%; by 2007 SSL VPNs make jump to 14% of the total market, software drops to 8%, and appliances dip to 78%

-- North America accounts for 44% of all VPN and firewall hardware and software revenue, EMEA is next at 31%, then Asia Pacific at 20%, and CALA at 5%

VPN and Firewall Appliances and Software tracks VPN and firewall appliances in six price-banded categories, hardware secure routers, SSL VPNs (application security gateways), and VPN and firewall software. Forecasts are updated quarterly and cover all regions (worldwide, North America, EMEA, Asia Pacific, and CALA).

Companies tracked in this service include 14South, AEP, Avaya, Aventail, Bivio, Celestix, Check Point, CipherOptics, Cisco, Computer Associates, Crossbeam, CyberGuard, D-Link, Enterasys, eSoft, F5, Fortinet, Intel, Juniper, Lucent, NETASQ, Netilla, Nokia, Nortel, Secure Computing, ServGate, SonicWALL, Symantec, WatchGuard, Whale, ZyXEL, and others.
