Security has been one of the few growing areas of the networking market over the last two years.
This is because of a combination of factors, including technology innovation, world events, increased government spending, increased paranoia, and increased real threats. Users are getting the message, and are looking into a wide variety of network security solutions, according to a new study from Infonetics Research, User Plans for Security Products and Services, North America 2004.
"While many people have been watching the security appliance market with great interest, they tend to overlook the extent to which security is actually deployed through routers and switches," said Jeff Wilson, principal analyst at Infonetics Research and lead analyst of the study. "Just as distributed Internet connectivity and the need for companies of all sizes to secure their networks drove the integration of multiple security technologies into single products, these same factors also drove network product manufacturers to integrate security into routers and switches."
Trends in the North American security market:
-- Wireless LANs, handheld devices, the Internet connection boundary, and extranet connections represent the top areas of opportunity in the security market
-- Secure routers and integrated appliances are the preferred network security devices of about the same percent of respondents now (roughly two-thirds each), rising slightly to 68% in 2006
-- Use of switches with integrated security, a product market in its early stages, grows significantly between now and 2006, from about a third to 44%
-- Most respondents look to buy integrated appliances that have between 100M and 1G aggregate performance, with 1G, 2G, and 5G and up all increasing over the next two years
-- 30% of respondents use managed security services now, 36% plan to by 2006
User Plans for Security Products and Services, North America 2004 is based on in-depth interviews with purchase decision-makers at 240 small, medium, and large organizations that use at least two major security products or services. An additional 450 organizations were interviewed in a separate survey to measure security adoption rates. The study includes analysis of the three groups as a whole, analysis of the differences between small, medium, and large organizations, and data broken out by vertical market for selected questions.
