Grisoft announced that after 5 years and some 20 million free downloads it has released a completely updated and improved AVG Free version of its industry leading AVG Anti-Virus software.
"In our ongoing efforts to provide the best possible protection against computer viruses for individual consumers, we felt it was the appropriate time to overhaul and revise our hugely successful Free Edition of AVG so that consumers could realize some of the benefits and features of the considerable development and improvement that AVG has undergone," commented Peter Lipa, President of Grisoft Inc. "We have successfully completed the beta trials of the new version of AVG Free, which has been received very positively by the many testers who participated in the program. The new AVG Free Edition is now available to all users for downloading. As to ensure that there will be no loss of protection to our individual AVG Free users, both versions of AVG Free will be available for approximately the next two months so that these users will have plenty of time to download and install the updated version before their current version expires."
The new Free Edition has been modified and updated to incorporate some the most advanced user and security features available in the popular and commercially available version AVG 7.0. The new edition of AVG Free, as well as the more powerful AVG 7.0 Professional Edition, can be downloaded directly from the Grisoft web site.
This update to AVG Free Edition is the most comprehensive and significant in the history of the AVG Free Edition with extensive advancements in the user interface and abilities of the software. The updated edition has been redesigned and engineered to provide the consumer with a powerful solution that is easy to install and use while alleviating some of the computing disruptions commonly associated with anti-virus software.
The new AVG Free Edition has, among others, these exciting features:
* An improved scanning engine that supports the rapid implementation of new detection techniques.
* The new user interface is designed to improve user satisfaction and ease of use.
* Support available through the AVG Free Online Services, which include a User Forum, Virus Encyclopedia, and FAQ section
* Classification of updates according to their importance into three different levels - priority, recommended and optional.
* In addition to supporting individual e-mail clients through program plug-ins (e.g. The Bat, MS Outlook 95/97/2000/XP, etc.), a significant addition for protecting e-mail clients has been added. The Personal E- mail Scanner - AVG EMS, which supports SMTP and POP3 e-mail clients can be set up automatically during installation.
AVG Anti-Virus
The AVG Anti-Virus software is unique in that it shields computers from viruses, trojans horses and worms with a multi-level approach that is more comprehensive than most protection programs.
* After using an extensive preprocessing procedure to scan data for patterns of virus code, AVG moves on to examine files with generic detection that roots out new strains or variants of known viruses.
* Two levels of heuristic analysis are performed. The dynamic level uses code emulation to evaluate in a secure virtual environment the behavior of the program or file being tested. Static heuristic analysis locates programming code that is typical for certain types of virus propagation.
* AVG performs an integrity check. Certain data associated with each scanned file is stored in its internal integrity database and used to heal infected files, potentially restoring information, which may have been lost during infection.
* AVG supports all legacy windows operating systems from Windows 95 through the latest version of Windows XP.
* AVG provides users with extremely fast and efficient database updates to meet the latest viral threats.
