The U.S. Army is using Symantec Brightmail AntiSpam to protect its large intranet portal, Army Knowledge Online (AKO) from spam, e-mail fraud, and other undesired content.

The AKO portal is the Army's enterprise knowledge management and communications conduit supporting secure email, instant messaging, online transactions and highly personalized user environments for Army personnel and contractors.

Under the terms of a three-year enterprise-wide agreement with AKO service provider CherryRoad Technologies of Parsippany, NJ, Symantec Brightmail AntiSpam serves as CherryRoad's designated technology solution and the foundation of ongoing email security and network management services the system integrator provides to AKO under contract. Complementing the implementation of Symantec Brightmail AntiSpam to shield more than 1.8 million AKO users' email accounts, Symantec security consultants are also deployed on-site at AKO's support facilities.

"The security of AKO email is critical for managing Army intellectual capital and enabling rapid data transfers between global users," said Gary Winkler, principal director for enterprise integration, Office of the Army Chief Information Officer/G6. "Symantec Brightmail AntiSpam gives the AKO user community assured protection from e-mail based threats and strengthens AKO's contributions to a more strategic, organized, and effective Army organization."

Through Symantec Brightmail AntiSpam's award-winning protection, CherryRoad and AKO administrators mitigate the risks of spam, fraud, email-borne viruses, and other unwanted email at the Internet gateway. By defending against current attacks in real-time and proactively identifying first-time spam, the Symantec Brightmail solution meets AKO's requirements for comprehensive protection. With the industry's leading accuracy rate -- one false positive in every million messages (Yankee Group, 2004), Symantec Brightmail AntiSpam prevents legitimate, high-priority message traffic from being mistakenly identified as spam. Symantec's multiple global operations centers, automated filter updates, and unmatched view of global spam ensure AKO's mail security defense continually operates with the benefit of current threat intelligence.

"With the growth of threats targeting email systems, government agencies are looking for powerful solutions that block novel threats, are easily managed and have zero impact on legitimate message traffic," said Tom Mazich, vice president, public sector, Symantec. "The Army's adoption of Symantec Brightmail AntiSpam to block a wide spectrum of current and future threats demonstrates the strength of Symantec's technology and our commitment to helping U.S. military customers maintain effective information security programs."

Army Knowledge Online is the pivotal tool in transforming the Army into a knowledge-based organization. The AKO portal is a single point of entry into a robust and scalable knowledge management system strategically changing the way the Army does business. By enabling greater knowledge sharing among Army communities, AKO fosters improved decision dominance by commanders and business stewards in the battle space, support organizations, and Army mission processes.
