Highly Efficient Data Compression and Automated Restoration Ensures Information Availability While Reducing Need for Costly Physical Storage.
ArcSight, the leading provider of enterprise security information management software, today announced ArcSight SmartStorage, a software product that addresses companies' urgent need for security data compression and retrieval solutions to help them efficiently manage the enormous volume of security data, which they are required to maintain by compliance, audit and governance regulations. SmartStorage reduces the cost of long-term security event storage by as much as 20 to 1, while ensuring that information is available on an on-demand basis for audits, investigations and compliance reporting.
New government regulations such as Sarbanes-Oxley and HIPAA require evidence of due diligence and a complete security audit trail, which force organizations to collect and retain increasing amounts of security-relevant information for longer periods of time. Traditional techniques to satisfy this requirement have forced a choice between "compress and store" products that save space, but make it extremely difficult to use the stored data, and expanded physical storage, which makes data easy to retrieve, but is costly.
ArcSight SmartStorage solves this issue by utilizing the native capabilities of enterprise-class databases such as Oracle, and multiple compression techniques, together with easy-to-use retrieval tools. This unparalleled approach enables companies to store their security information on the same mission-critical storage technology they are accustomed to using for other strategic data, while significantly reducing the amount of physical storage required.
"Security information management systems gather and correlate massive volumes of data from the multitudes of security devices in an enterprise," said Larry Lunetta, vice president of marketing and business development at ArcSight. "Our customers need a cost effective way to store this data to meet new government mandates, while keeping the data accessible within the ArcSight information framework so they can easily retrieve, investigate, audit and report on their security posture."
SmartStorage utilizes the partitioning available in enterprise database systems such as Oracle and provides a customized "rolloff" algorithm for information that is no longer needed for real time usage. When a partition reaches the end of its real time life, it is automatically compressed and stored on the same physical volume, but in a much smaller state. If that partition is needed for investigation, audit or reporting, it can be recalled via the console and reintroduced to the live data set as if it had never left. When the partition is no longer needed, it can be sent back to the compressed archive. By using proven, enterprise-class database software as the basis for SmartStorage, the amount of overall storage required is significantly reduced without introducing yet another data management technology.
