With wireless local area network (WLAN) technology becoming ubiquitous and adoption among enterprises increasing, the market for WLAN security technologies is poised to grow phenomenally.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan, World WLAN Security Technologies Market, reveals that this market generated revenue of $135.2 million in 2003.

"The WLAN security solutions market is, however, a highly dynamic one," cautions Frost & Sullivan Industry Analyst Wai Sing Lee. "Network security is a moving target and threat is met with solution in an almost continuous cycle; hence, security is never absolutely assured."

Faced with constantly changing standards and protocols, WLAN security providers will have to continuously develop innovative solutions that take advantage and stay ahead of current security standards as well as fully satisfy customers' needs.

This profusion of prevailing standards is confusing end users and forcing them to consider upgrading or even replacing their earlier deployments. End users are increasingly questioning the interoperability, upgradeability, and compatibility between the various standards, since they are naturally reluctant to adopt solutions that might soon require replacement.

"Market participants need to find ways to reassure end users about continued technological progress to increase enterprise WLAN adoptions," says Lee. "New security standards such as Wi-Fi protected access (WPA) and the upcoming 802.11i specification are likely to help them do so."

Apart from all the standards-related confusion, clients also have to decide on the most appropriate and cost-effective solution for their specific situation. This often causes delay in their WLAN deployments and increases vendors' costs as they try to educate clients about the best possible solution for their needs.

This can prove to be particularly challenging for new solutions providers that already have to contend with significant competition from existing network solution providers. Incumbent vendors are developing increasingly effective solutions for WLANs and have a strong advantage in terms of prior relationships with potential enterprise customers.

"In response to this challenge, virtually all providers are now attempting to move beyond simply security to a network management solution," says Lee. "They are either enhancing the functionalities of current solutions or forming partnerships with existing companies to gain entry into enterprise deployments."
