The International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium (ISC)2 today announced the launch of a new award program that will honor a federal executive who has made significant contributions to the advancement of the federal information technology (IT) security workforce.
The (ISC)2 Government Information Security Leadership Award will be presented on Dec. 1, 2004 at the E-Gov Institute's co-located Information Assurance and Homeland Security Conference and Exhibition at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington D.C.
The award, which will be given annually, is open to federal employees at the executive level (GS-15 and SES personnel) and is independent of professional certification. It will be awarded to the individual who has significantly contributed to the enhancement of the IT security workforce by demonstrating a leadership role in any IT security workforce improvement initiative, program or project, on either a government-wide or agency-specific basis.
The (ISC)2 U.S. Government Advisory Board for Cyber Security, comprised of volunteer, senior-level information security professionals responsible for counseling (ISC)2 on policies, trends and certifications within the public sector, has established a nominations committee to review and recommend candidates based upon its selection criteria and eligibility requirements. The Advisory Board will then select a winner from a group of finalists.
"(ISC)2 has established this award as part of our effort to recognize the commitment within the federal government to a highly qualified and ethical information security workforce," said James E. Duffy, CISSP, president and chief executive officer of (ISC)2. "We believe this award is a significant honor of distinction within the field of information security as government professionals rise to the nation's challenge of developing and protecting its critical security infrastructure. We look forward to recognizing the achievements of those pioneers whose extraordinary efforts continue to further the federal IT security workforce."
Officials at (ISC)2 selected the 5th annual E-Gov Institute Information Assurance event as the site for its inaugural award reception because it is designed by and for those responsible for information and cyber security programs in the public sector and attracts an audience of executive-level information security professionals. "We are honored to host and co-promote the award and commend (ISC)2 for recognizing this important group of information security professionals," said Mike Smoyer, general manager of FCW Media Group Events.
To be considered for the (ISC)2 Government Information Security Leadership Award, candidates must be active or retired federal employees or have separated from government service within the past 12 months. Retired or separated professionals will only be considered for accomplishments made within 18 months of the award's announcement.
