Entriq, and a subsidiary of the multinational media group Naspers, enabled the secure viewing of highlights from NBC's coverage of the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens on the popular NBCOlympics.com Web site.
This represented the first time moving images and play-by-play audio commentary from the Olympic Games were made available to viewers over the Internet in the United States.
Entriq helped play an important role in the success of NBCOlympics.com by ensuring that access to NBC's Olympic highlights was restricted to Internet users in the United States, NBC's broadcast territory. Distribution of the highlights was made possible by an integrated solution from Entriq and the Akamai global delivery platform. Together with Akamai, Entriq successfully ensured complete protection and geographic control of highlight video on NBCOlympics.com. The Entriq and Akamai solution was approved by the International Olympic Committee as a technology solution for secure geographically contained video from the Games over the Internet, which enabled NBC to release select content in a secure manner and track visitors and registrations accordingly.
"We were pleased with the success of NBCOlympics.com throughout the Games, and credit Entriq for their critical role in providing an effective technology solution for protecting streamed content to viewers online in the U.S.," said Gary Zenkel, executive vice president of NBC Olympics. "With the Entriq technology, we were assured that the video highlights were protected from distribution outside our territorial boundary of the U.S."
Entriq provides a complete solution for protecting and monetizing media, and supplies customers a full set of technologies to monitor, manage, protect and sell pay media over the Internet. These solutions include billing and sales tracking, support and services for pay media, conditional access for streaming media, DRM for downloaded content and tools for publishing content online and for mobile devices.
"More than 29 million households in the U.S. are connecting to the Internet via broadband access," said Boyd Peterson, vice president at the Yankee Group. "With 121 million worldwide projected broadband connections by the end of 2004, other global sports franchises would be well advised to explore this new channel of distribution to further monetize their media assets by using pay media solutions such as those offered by Entriq."
Controlling Internet Content on a Worldwide Basis
In addition to its work with NBC Olympics, Entriq announced a separate partnership with the European Broadcast Union (EBU), wherein the company allowed, per IOC policy, broadcasters to stream secure footage and highlights from the Olympic Games for European Internet viewers. The Entriq solution not only ensured the secure delivery of Olympic Games footage over the Internet, but also enabled both NBC and the EBU to feel confident that only viewers from their respective territories have access to content.
"Broadband usage is on the rise, and the Internet is now evolving into a great place for consumers to access content that is oftentimes unavailable on broadcast television and is the perfect complement to traditional media consumption," said Jan Steenkamp, chief executive officer of Entriq. "We were able to provide NBC with the ability to adhere to the policies of the IOC for Internet streaming, while providing secure highlights of NBC's Athens Olympic coverage."
