Shavlik Technologies has announced that it now provides network administrators the ability to configure the Microsoft Windows Firewall settings when deploying Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).
This option allows administrators to both deploy XP SP2 and configure the Windows Firewall without requiring the use of Active Directory, custom scripting solutions or updating each machine individually.
Shavlik notes that it is important to keep the Windows Firewall enabled whenever possible, with some exceptions for authorized business applications. Unlike many other patch management applications that simply disable the Windows Firewall by default, Shavlik allows users to configure the Windows Firewall during the XP SP2 deployment, maintaining the highest level of security, while allowing administrators to manage systems with Shavlik HFNetChkPro.
According to Mark Shavlik, president and CEO of Shavlik Technologies, this is an important security enhancement for systems administrators. "Windows XP SP2 with the Windows Firewall offers significant security enhancements to customers, whether at work or at home. Patch management applications that automatically disable the Windows Firewall during deployment may be putting customers at risk. Our solution allows administrators to enable the Windows Firewall during deployment and configure it for their specific business needs, ensuring a more secure computing environment."
Shavlik security products, including the industry-leading Shavlik HFNetChkPro and the recently-announced Shavlik Security Agents, can be used to assess and deploy patches to computers that are protected by the Windows Firewall. Shavlik has made available a document to help administrators with the process of enabling and configuring the XP SP2 Firewall while deploying patches using Shavlik's security products. To obtain this document, please visit the Shavlik Forum and view the Shavlik Knowledge Base article.
An additional resource for security professionals who wish to discuss their experiences and share their knowledge of Windows XP SP2 is the new Windows XP SP2 mailing list.
