Clearswift today launched its newest version of MIMEsweeper for Exchange.
Designed to strengthen protection against all internal email threats, the product becomes available just as most companies begin the upgrade to Microsoft Exchange 2003 -- a process that is expected to peak in late 2005.
MIMEsweeper for Exchange complements Clearswift's other flagship product, MAILsweeper for SMTP, which provides full email content security, anti-spam software, remote management and web-based reporting functionality at the email gateway.
"Over 80% of all email transmissions are between internal communities," said David Guyatt, Clearswift's CEO. "And a recent survey by the DTI(1) showed that a third of all security issues -- principally viruses, worms and circulation of offensive or loss of confidential material -- originate within the organization and would not be intercepted and analyzed by boundary security solutions. That's why this product is so timely. It also addresses a large and rapidly growing market, since more than two thirds of large corporations in the world are committed to Microsoft Exchange(2)."
MIMEsweeper for Exchange enables an organization to implement content security policies for email on Microsoft Exchange Server 2000 and Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, with a primary focus on internal email communications between users via Microsoft Exchange server solutions.
MIMEsweeper for Exchange defends against the threat from viruses, the flow of inappropriate material, abuse of company bandwidth and storage resources and leakage of confidential information. It secures internal communications infrastructures from the circulation of unauthorized content that infiltrates from CDs and floppy disks, from laptops used away from the office or even web-mail -- content that doesn't go anywhere near the SMTP gateway. Once threats like these -- or others like the introduction of large video or audio files or non-standard applications -- enter an enterprise environment, perimeter security solutions do little to prevent internal propagation to other users, groups or servers.
MIMEsweeper for Exchange also allows the establishment of company-wide policies to control confidential information and files, so such data cannot be purposefully or accidentally emailed to unauthorized personnel. This has particular application in regulated industries like financial services where there are controls on what buyers can send to sellers. It also prevents the internal distribution of salary and other personal employee details.
MIMEsweeper for Exchange has all the capabilities and benefits provided in Clearswift's market leading MAILsweeper Business Suite II, as well as some new functionality that is fundamental to interacting with the Exchange server itself:
-- A new Exchange Intercept Module intercepts all email on the Exchange Server before delivery, and passes it on to the MAILsweeper Security Service for processing to ensure all content is checked against company policy.
-- The Exchange System Manager extension enables administrators to configure the Intercept Module, i.e. turn interception on/off, and configure IP addresses of other MIMEsweeper for Exchange servers to stop duplicated processing of emails.
-- The Exchange Address List plug-in enables administrators to use the Exchange address lists to identify users and set policy.
"MIMEsweeper for Exchange is the most comprehensive and easy-to-use policy-based internal email security solution on the market today," added Guyatt. "It gives senior managers the confidence that their company can comply with new regulations, with best practice and with company policy. Because MIMEsweeper for Exchange uses the proven, award-winning MAILsweeper for SMTP as a core component, it permits administrators familiar with MAILsweeper for SMTP to quickly transfer their skills. And their end-users will be able to take advantage of this market-leading content security technology to ensure that their internal mail is secure."
