ZyXEL Communications Launches ZyWALL IDP 10

IDP Device from ZyXEL Detects and Prevents Threats to Integrity, Confidentiality and Availability of Network Resources.
ZyXEL Communications has announced the North American launch of the ZyWALL IDP 10, the first in a series of intrusion detection and prevention network security appliances for the SOHO and small/medium enterprise (SME) market.
To date, basic SPI firewall protection has been limited to controlling network traffic by examining source and destination information in the packet header (Layers 2-4). As a result, a firewall-protected network is still vulnerable to hackers or worm attacks and other network threats located in the packet payload (Layers 5-7). The new 10Mbps ZyWALL IDP 10 from ZyXEL is distinguished by its Layer 7 (application-layer) protection, which helps network administrators identify potential threats and empowers them with effective countermeasures well before an actual attack occurs.
The ZyWALL IDP 10's detecting/preventing engine combines signature-based pattern-matching detection and anomaly detection technologies to combat DoS and DDoS attacks, buffer overflow attacks, network scan attacks, port scan attacks, Trojan horse attacks, back door attacks and worms. Signatures used to detect network threats and intrusions are updated periodically, and may be predefined by network administrators to ensure that the latest protection for the most recent security concerns is constantly available.
"Most hardware and software firewalls in addition to anti-virus solutions provide limited detection and defense against some, but not all types of attacks. As intrusion techniques become more skilled, users are requiring a more advanced solution that is not widely available in today's market. We've addressed this need by offering complete, real-time protection built into the ZyWALL IDP," said Munira Brooks, senior vice president of sales, marketing and business development, ZyXEL.
When a network is assaulted, the ZyWALL IDP can detect and block the unusual network activity according to customized security policies. The customizable policies allow the ZyWALL IDP 10 to perform a combination of preventative actions including logging and dropping the infected packet as well as dropping the source connection entirely.
ZyXEL's IDP technology offers advantages over Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS), another common solution that can only provide warnings for suspicious attacks but not the countermeasures against them. IDS is also prone to display too many false positives, which results in wasted recovery attempts and reduced productivity.
Traditional antivirus software handles file-based viruses but is ineffective when dealing with network worms such as Blaster or SoBig. The ZyWALL IDP's pre-emptive in-line mode enables a faster and more highly customized response. In addition, the ZyWALL IDP 10 has the unique advantage of blocking resource-intense Layer 7 network applications such as peer-to-peer exchange and instant messaging.
Pricing and Availability
Pricing for ZyXEL's ZyWALL IDP 10 Intrusion Detection & Prevention security appliance is $2,499, and will be widely available starting Sept. 1 through ZyXEL's national network of authorized resellers.
