Worldwide VPN and firewall hardware and software revenue was down 1% to $722.5 million between 1Q04 and 2Q04, mainly due to Cisco and Nokia having an off quarter, according to Infonetics Research's quarterly worldwide market share and forecast service, VPN and Firewall Appliances and Software.

Annual revenue is expected to grow to $3.6 billion between 2003 and 2007.

"Worldwide SSL VPN revenue grew 10% between the first and second quarters this year, and will grow 92% by 2Q05; between 2003 and 2007, we project annual revenue to jump 467%," said Jeff Wilson, principal analyst at Infonetics Research. "The SSL VPN market is performing to expectations in North America, but has been slower to develop outside North America. Several vendors, including Aventail and Juniper, announced new products this quarter, aiming at small and medium organizations. Entry into the mid-market is a sign that both the technology and the market are beginning to mature."

2Q04 Market Highlights

-- Cisco remains the revenue-leading vendor overall, accounting for more than a third of worldwide VPN and firewall appliance and software revenue, down just slightly from their record-high first quarter

-- Check Point maintains second position in worldwide revenue market share, up one point from 1Q04; they had a very strong quarter, and their presence is significant, especially when considered in conjunction with their appliance partners like Nokia

-- Juniper gains a point, maintaining the number-three spot for revenue market share, having had another great quarter, particularly in SSL VPNs, a market that they are beginning to run away with

-- Fortinet, Nokia, Nortel, SonicWALL, Symantec, and WatchGuard are strong second-tier players for revenue market share

-- VPN and firewall appliances make up the majority of worldwide revenue in the VPN and firewall market, software revenue makes up a seventh of the pie, and SSL VPNs account for 4%; by 2007 SSL VPNs will grow to make up 13% of the total

VPN and Firewall Appliances and Software tracks VPN and firewall appliances in six price-banded categories, hardware secure routers, SSL VPNs (application security gateways), and VPN and firewall software. Forecasts are updated quarterly and cover all regions (worldwide, North America, EMEA, Asia Pacific, and CALA).

Companies tracked in this service include 14South, AEP, Avaya, Aventail, Bivio, Celestix, Check Point, CipherOptics, Cisco, Computer Associates, Crossbeam, CyberGuard, D-Link, Enterasys, eSoft, F5, Fortinet, Intel, Intrusion, Juniper, Lucent, NETASQ, Netilla, Nokia, Nortel, Secure Computing, ServGate, SonicWALL, Symantec, WatchGuard, Whale, ZyXEL, and others.
