Symantec today announced the appointment of Dr. Ajei S. Gopal as senior vice president of technology and corporate development.
Reporting directly to Symantec's Chairman and CEO, John W. Thompson, Dr. Gopal will be responsible for guiding the company's technology strategy, integrating with technology partners, and leading the company's merger and acquisition activities.
"Dr. Gopal's team will look out three to five years and lead Symantec's development of advanced management technologies and techniques to help customers manage an increasingly complex IT infrastructure," said John W. Thompson, Symantec chairman and chief executive officer. "With both large company and entrepreneurial experience, he brings an incredibly strong academic, corporate research and development background to Symantec, as well as unique talent for creating cross organizational integration."
In 2000, Dr. Gopal co-founded ReefEdge Networks, a leading provider of managed and secure wireless LAN systems, where he served as CEO and a member of the Board of Directors. Prior to that, Dr. Gopal served as chief technology officer for IBM's Pervasive Computing Division, where his responsibilities included product and technology strategy; product architecture and development; and technology partnerships.
While at IBM, he also held a variety of positions in the Research Division from 1991 to 1997 where he conducted and managed research in the areas of systems management, distributed and clustered systems, and operating systems. From 1984 to 1987, Dr. Gopal was a member of the technical staff in the Applied Research Division at Bell Communications Research, now known as Telcordia, where he conducted research in architectures to support multimedia telephony application.
Dr. Gopal received his doctorate degree in computer science from Cornell University. He also has a master of science degree from Cornell and a master of science degree from the University of Arizona. He received his bachelor's degree from the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay.
