Lerch, Bates & Associates has selected the Firebox X integrated security appliance from WatchGuard Technologies, to protect its network of offices and consultancies in North America.

Lerch, Bates & Associates has installed a WatchGuard Firebox X1000 security appliance in its Denver, CO headquarters to work in conjunction with more than 30 WatchGuard Firebox SOHO 6tcs, deployed previously by the firm to act as VPN endpoints to secure its network of satellite offices and mobile workers. Firebox X integrated security appliances offer firewall, VPN, application layer security, intrusion prevention functionality, spam blocking, web filtering, authentication and high availability capability.

The consulting firm originally selected WatchGuard security appliances in 1999. In the wake of a significant security breach, Lerch, Bates & Associates initiated a search for a solution to secure its network against future attacks. After evaluating solutions from other vendors including Cisco, the company selected WatchGuard equipment based on price, compatibility with its existing systems and the strong recommendations it received from the field.

The company has now upgraded to a Firebox X1000. The appliance's model upgrade capability will enable Lerch, Bates & Associates to support future growth and adapt to the evolution of security threats by seamlessly upgrading to any higher model in the line via the activation of a software license key, according to Troy Billingham, IT manager at Lerch, Bates & Associates.

"Security is not my primary area of expertise and, as the sole person responsible for network security, I needed a solution that was compatible with our existing systems, easy to configure, explain and manage," said Billingham. "It took me only two hours of work to install and connect the Firebox X1000. You can't put a price on that kind of efficiency.

"Our satellite offices and telecommuters need to have the same level of access as the rest of our staff but without comprising the security of our network. We've been able to minimize those concerns with WatchGuard," added Billingham. "In addition to its reliability, the upgrade capability of the Firebox X gives me additional peace of mind. Knowing that I can upgrade our defence without undergoing a major overhaul allows me to concentrate on growing the business rather than devising new ways to secure it."

"Consultancies such as Lerch, Bates & Associates are privy to sensitive information about the finances and architectures of buildings and companies. Securing that data is a major priority," said John Stuckey, vice president of product marketing at WatchGuard. "WatchGuard realizes that businesses need to operate in environments that are flexible, adaptable and secure. The Firebox X provides these necessities at a cost that makes them a reality for growing businesses."

WatchGuard Firebox X: Integrated Security Appliances

Designed for the specific requirements of SMEs, WatchGuard Firebox X is the first integrated security appliance with full model upgrade capability that allows users to upgrade to any higher model in the line and/or increase port density simply by applying a software license key. With this capability, customers can scale existing Firebox X security appliance simply and economically without costly and time-consuming hardware replacements. As their security needs change, customers activate model upgrades via a software license key and obtain all the performance and functionality of any higher model in the line just as if they had purchased it originally. Firebox X models combine firewall, VPN, application layer security, intrusion prevention functionality, spam blocking, web filtering and authentication in a single appliance. Total cost of ownership for the Firebox X is up to 80 percent less than comparable appliances on the market over a four-year period.
