Following the U.S. Department of Justice's announcement to crack down on junk e-mailers, phishers, and other online scammers yesterday, Barracuda Networks announced support for the Sender ID Framework.
The Sender ID Framework is an email authentication system co-authored by Microsoft and Meng Wong, CTO of pobox.com, which combines Microsoft's Caller ID for Email proposal and Wong's SPF (Sender Policy Framework) into a single framework for the industry to prevent domain spoofing in email.
"We applaud the ongoing efforts made by the federal government to crackdown on the worst Internet offenders," said Dean Drako, president and CEO of Barracuda Networks. "We have long believed that spam legislation on its own will have little effect on curbing this plague. It is only through legal enforcement and strong technology deployment that we can effectively restore email as a viable business communications tool."
"We believe that implementing support for Sender ID Framework to the Barracuda Spam Firewall's already robust feature set underscores our commitment to protecting customers from the fraudulent activities that are targeting email users," continued Drako. "We are pleased to join Microsoft as they work to standardize this important technology."
The Sender ID Framework, which is currently being considered by the Internet Engineering Task Force for Internet standardization, aims to prevent e-mail domain spoofing and to provide greater protection against spam and phishing schemes through sender authentication. This technology enables the Barracuda Spam Firewall to verify that the message was sent from an authorized email server and deliver or block the message.
"Support from industry leaders, such as Barracuda Networks, is vital to achieving the global adoption needed for the Sender ID Framework to be successful as a key step in the fight against spam and phishing attacks," said Craig Spiezle, director of Industry and Partner Relations, Microsoft Safety Technology and Strategy Team. "We are pleased to have Barracuda Networks' support for Sender ID and look forward to engaging their expertise in the fight against spam and other threats."
Support for Sender ID Framework is planned for deployment with firmware version 3.0 which will be included automatically for new Barracuda Spam Firewall customers and will deploy to current customers at no additional charge.
