Akonix Systems warns corporations about a new Download.ject virus currently spreading over AIM and ICQ instant messaging networks.
Akonix has identified this threat and updated its products to automatically protect corporations using Akonix L7 Enterprise from the attack.
The new variant of the Download.ject Trojan horse follows its first attack last June, but it is now being spread via instant messaging. Experts believe the Trojan is designed to steal credit card and other financial data. The virus first appears as an instant message containing a link to a Web site. Once a user clicks on the link, Internet Explorer (IE) will open and infect the machine using multiple IE vulnerabilities.
Leveraging the industry's only dynamic update capability, real-time IM content filtering and Akonix's unique IM security expertise, Akonix L7 Enterprise provides an unmatched defense against IM borne attacks. Updated Spim and Malware Filters automatically -- and without any IT intervention -- download and install to deployed Akonix systems, preventing new threats as soon as they emerge.
"This isn't the first attack using IM networks and it definitely won't be the last, proving that companies need a preventative security solution to protect their corporate networks," said Dmitry Shapiro, chief technology officer at Akonix Systems. "IM provides huge benefits by allowing real-time communications with co-workers, partners and customers. However, without a security and management system, IM users expose their enterprise to dangerous IM borne attacks that can impact the entire network infrastructure. Unfortunately, as IM becomes more and more popular on corporate networks it will increasingly become a target for the developers of viruses, worms and other malicious content."
