3Com today announced that its line of Secure network interface cards (NICs) have achieved the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2, Level 2.
FIPS certification allows these products to be more broadly deployed throughout government entities and other organizations that require stringent security standards.
"3Com has achieved the first for an IPSec offloading network interface card, once again positioning 3Com in the forefront as a provider of secure connectivity to the government and enterprise markets," said Rahul Jain, 3Com security product manager.
The FIPS standard defines U.S. government cryptographic security standards in areas such as key management and cryptographic algorithms. Achieving FIPS 140-2 certification alerts government and enterprise customers that the algorithms 3Com's Secure NICs use to encrypt data function properly. Additionally, achieving the Level 2 certification indicates that the product is tamper resistant, further strengthening overall security.
Designed for Windows, Linux, and NetWare environments, 3Com Secure NICs harden at-risk systems without impacting network performance. The 3Com Secure NICs use an embedded security processor to offload encryption, authentication, and other cycle-intensive tasks from the host central processing unit (CPU)--resulting in optimal system and application response. These innovative copper and fiber connections include intelligent management and server features that help improve network performance, reduce administration time, and lower support costs.
The 3Com Secure NICs are an ideal connectivity choice for government and enterprise customers who are concerned about security. These cards offload Internet protocol security (IPSec) on to an on-board processor providing higher throughput with lower CPU utilization.
The secure cards can be upgraded to the 3Com Embedded Firewall. The Embedded Firewall solution extends centrally managed, hardware enforced security to notebooks, desktops, and servers across the organization--inside and outside the network perimeter. This innovative combination of policy server software and secure card hardware safeguards your network assets with superior tamper-resistance that software-only firewalls can't match.
