AlterPoint provides the first NCCM solution to deliver end-to-end configuration management to enhance overall network security for multi-vendor devices.

AlterPoint says that DeviceAuthority Suite plays a critical role in lowering security risk and preventing the issues associated with undetected and incorrect configurations of network devices in enterprise IT infrastructures. DeviceAuthority Suite is the first NCCM solution that spans the entire network device environment, providing a closed loop between change management, security management, and compliance to enhance overall network security at the device level. DeviceAuthority Suite gives security managers an immediate, comprehensive understanding of their network infrastructure's security vulnerabilities and risks, as well as its compliance with corporate security policies and government regulations, including Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA and Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS).

Quoted in a recent searchnetworking.com article, Daniel Golding, senior analyst at Burton Group, explained from their annual Burton Group Catalyst Conference in late July that today's "smarter" devices are harder to secure, and advised that vulnerabilities can be avoided through appropriate measures taken at the device level. Golding suggested organizations should enforce policy and compliance, use SSH, and implement proper change management and configuration control solutions across their infrastructures to enhance overall security.

With DeviceAuthority Suite's change management, compliance management and security features, enterprise organizations will experience reduced security risk and IT management costs, while increasing service availability and network performance:

-- Comprehensive Change Management: One undetected, incorrect configuration change can expose an organization's infrastructure to harm. DeviceAuthority Suite enables IT professionals to plan, implement, verify, validate, remediate and audit changes efficiently and safely. Unlike reactive network monitoring solutions focused on mean-time-to-repair, DeviceAuthority Suite focuses on automatically detecting issues and fixing them permanently.

-- Rapid Software Image & Patch management: With DeviceAuthority Suite's centralized software library and intelligent software distribution capability, network and security managers can efficiently manage image changes around patching devices exposed by hardware vendor bugs or security vulnerabilities. A recent example is the Cisco Security Advisor Bulletin #61365 of August 18th which highlights a denial of service vulnerability to any router running software versions 12.x using the OSPF routing protocol. DeviceAuthority Suite ensures this type of issue can be immediately fixed with minimal effort and risk to the business.

-- Policy Enforcement and Compliance Management: Organizations are under constant pressure to comply with both internal and external policies. DeviceAuthority Suite ensures compliance is enforced and managed across all current, planned and future network devices through automated discovery capabilities that detect compliance breaches, allow the remediation of out-of-policy devices, and enable IT to establish compliance rules.

-- Secure Network Change: Leveraging secure protocols for device communications, including SSH and HTTPS, DeviceAuthority Suite provides security managers with the capability to establish and maintain a security configuration baseline; discover, prioritize and mitigate vulnerabilities; establish security controls; and eliminate root causes.

"Device configurations are the foundation of a network, and are extremely vulnerable to unintentional errors and malicious tampering," said Jeff Ait, president and CEO, AlterPoint. "We have a unique opportunity to provide customers with the right solution for addressing their security needs across network devices. The functionality in DeviceAuthority Suite demonstrates our commitment to providing market-leading solutions that address the growing needs of enterprise customers. DeviceAuthority Suite's key value to security managers is that it enforces network integrity, while still providing complete control over dynamic networks."
